The Department of Psychology at Berry College invites applications for a two-year visiting assistant professor to begin August 2021 (with the possibility of renewal).
Part of the Charter School of Education and Human Sciences, the Psychology Department consists of nine full-time faculty and is consistently ranked as the second largest major (35-45 graduates per year). A vibrant, collegial department committed to providing students with diverse perspectives and experiences, the unusual breadth of the faculty expertise permits it to offer students many curricular options in major content areas, to offer varied research opportunities tailored to students’ interests, and to provide students with meaningful applied opportunities. The department prides itself on the many opportunities for student-faculty collaborative research, which is bolstered by the George Scholar program, an endowed financial catalyst for faculty-mentored student research, faculty and student travel, and a lecture series highlighting scholars whose interests align with our faculty-student projects. The department has a particularly strong emphasis on offering practical, firsthand experience in the application of psychology and the development of students’ professional and personal skills through internships and related experiences. The department supports the Applied Behavior Analysis minor, which includes coursework for becoming a Board-Certified assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) and is open to all majors across campus.
Faculty teaching in the Psychology Department have the opportunity to develop innovative special topics seminars that push students to think deeply and apply principles of empirical science to contemporary issues marked by respect for diverse perspectives. Overall, our mission is to provide mentored learning and growth experiences to help students reach their potential as leaders in their communities and professions, and to lead lives of integrity and service applying principles of scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and ethical decision making.
The successful candidate must be committed to excellent teaching in a liberal-arts environment, and to becoming an active citizen in departmental affairs. This visiting appointment is a perfect opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience supported by a group of caring and seasoned professors. Departmental faculty are committed to developing the candidate’s proficiency as a teacher/scholar and mentoring them as early-career psychological scientists, especially for faculty hoping to pursue careers at small, teaching-focused liberal -arts institutions. Although open to any specialty in psychology, preference will be given to those with experience teaching Introduction to Psychology or other undergraduate psychology courses. The primary teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Psychology and classes related to one’s area of scholarship or training. Applicants should have a doctorate in psychology or related field. Applicants who are ABD will be considered.
