The Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy (CFA) at the Department of Political Science, Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University invites applications for three or more postdoctoral positions. The call is open for general applications in the research areas of the Centre, as well as for a specific research project on scientific elites.
The expected starting date is December 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The duration for the positions can vary from 3-4 years.
The position as postdoctoral researcher is a fixed-term academic research position. As part of small, interdisciplinary project teams, each postdoc position will cover a variety of tasks including both research design, data collection, analysis and dissemination. The selected candidates will also be expected to contribute substantially to publications, both as first and secondary authors. The position does not include teaching obligations.

Postdoctoral researcher under the “Scientific elites” project
The position under the “Scientific elites” project is funded by the Independent Research Foundation Denmark (DFF), and led by Senior Researcher Jens Peter Andersen. The successful applicant will closely collaborate with the PI as well as team members from University of Copenhagen. The project seeks to combine bibliometric research with sociology of science in an effort to increase our understanding of the characteristics of scientific elites, how they are created and how they maintain their positions of power in the academic system.

General positions as postdoctoral researcher at CFA
General postdocs at CFA will typically be linked to a specific research project as their primary responsibility, but will also be expected to participate in other research activities at CFA. Among the relevant projects are:
- “Prosecon” (Promoting the socio-economic impact of research – the role of funding practices) is a comparative study of the effects of research funding instruments with the intent to promote socio-economic impact. The project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
- “Villum Experiment – a study of the effects of blinded peer review” explores the outcomes of a novel grant form that seeks to promote unorthodox and innovative research projects. Through an interview study and quantitative analysis, the project will focus on the selection process, how the research was carried out, and the results of the research. The project is funded by the Villum Foundation.
- “Hybrida” is an EU Horizon 2020 project that will address how conceptual, methodological and regulatory uncertainties arise in organoid research and will develop a conceptual and regulatory framework develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for organoid research and organoid-related technologies. The project includes workshops and individual and focus group interviews to map and analyse stakeholder concerns across different social contexts and societal groups.
- The “BioMedical Design” Novo Nordisk Foundation Fellowship Programme is a novel training scheme aimed at developing future leaders of healthcare innovation across professions, fields and sectors. The project will study effects and outcomes of the fellowship programme through in-depth interviews, participant observation and questionnaire surveys.
We seek applicants with expertise within the areas of sociology, economics, management, information science, education, political science, network science or related fields. A PhD in social science or related areas is required. We expect the candidates to have excellent communication skills in spoken and written English, and an ability to produce state-of-the art social-science research.
In addition to a CV and proof of PhD degree (or the near completion of a PhD degree), interested applicants should provide a 1-2 page application letter motivating why they are interested in the position and how they can contribute to specific research project(s) and CFA’s research activities in general. The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State (in Danish).
