TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of India and TWAS have established a number of fellowships for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue research toward a PhD in emerging areas of science and technology for which facilities are available in the laboratories and institutes of the CSIR.

CSIR and TWAS will keep about 20% of 2021 awards for COVID-19 related research topics. These could be in the area of :I. Digital and Molecular Surveillance;II. Rapid and Economical Diagnostics;III. Repurposing of Drugs, Vaccine and Convalescent Plasma Therapy;IV. Hospital Assistive Devices and PPEs.

Programme Details

  • TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable in CSIR research laboratories and institutes in India for a maximum period of four years.
  • Applicants may be registered for a PhD degree in their home country, or may enrol in a PhD course at any University in India.
  • Eligible CSIR institutions: Information on CSIR laboratories and institutes can be obtained by following the links from the CSIR homepage (www.csir.res.in). Alternatively, a list of eligible institutes is available here.
  • SANDWICH Fellowships (for those registered for a PhD in their home country): The Fellowship may be granted for a minimum period of 6 months and a maximum period to be decided by the host institute, but no greater than 3 years.
  • FULL-TIME Fellowships (for those not registered for a PhD): The Fellowship may be granted for up to a maximum duration of 4 years.
  • CSIR will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, Fellowship awardees are entitled to subsidized accommodation.
  • The language of instruction for foreign scholars in CSIR laboratories/institutes is English.

Eligibility

Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year.
  • Be nationals of a developing country (other than India).
  • Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country.
  • Hold a Master’s degree in science and technology.
  • Be regularly employed in their home country and hold a research assignment there.
  • SANDWICH Fellowships: Be registered PhD students in their home country and provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the HOME university.
  • FULL-TIME Fellowships: Be willing to register at a university in India within the first year, if agreed to by CSIR.
  • Be accepted at a CSIR laboratory/institution and provide an official acceptance letter from the host institution (see sample Acceptance Letter that can be downloaded below or included in the Application Form). NB: Requests for acceptance must be directed to the chosen CSIR host institution(s), with copy to the CSIR contact person.  This will allow CSIR to monitor requests and offer support or assistance in finding  suitable host institution(s), if necessary;
  • provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;
  • provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;
  • not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;
  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.

Submitting your application

  • If already registered for a PhD in their home country, applicants should ensure that the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar of the HOME university signs a copy of the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” (see sample included in the Application Form), a copy of which should be sent to both CSIR and TWAS.
  • Applicants should submit the acceptance letter from a CSIR institution to CSIR and TWAS when applying or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.
  • Applications for the TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme can ONLY be submitted to TWAS via the online portal and copy of the submitted application must be sent to CSIR by email. A tutorial on how to use the online application form is available below for download.
  • Please be advised that applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio. Applicants will not be eligible to visit another institution in that year under the TWAS Visiting Professorprogrammes. One exception: The head of an institution who invites an external scholar to share his/her expertise under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes may still apply for another programme.

Results of the fellowship selection should be available toward the end of 2021 or early 2022, and selected candidates will be able to start their fellowship NO earlier than beginning of 2022.

  • TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India for studies leading towards a PhD degree in the physical sciences for four years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
  • The Centre carries out the following research activities:
    – Linear and Non-linear spectroscopy, Ultrafast molecular processes and spectroscopy, Ultrafast dynamics in biological macromolecules and magnetization, Ultrafast laser induced processes, Soft condensed matter systems of chemical and biological interests, mesocopic physics, ionic liquids, multi-component liquid mixtures, supercooled melts, supercritical fluids, bio-nano interface, nano-magnetism, magnonic crystals, micromagnetic simulations, Nanomaterials in general, and Physics of Correlated oxides, low dimensional systems, magnetic shape memory alloys, dilute magnetic semi-conductors, multi-ferroic materials, thin films of metals and oxides, electronic, magnetic and structural properties of complex materials, superconductivity,  strongly correlated electronic systems, quantum many-body physics, micromagnetic and monte carlo simulation of static  and dynamic properties of nanomagnets, theoretical study of thermalconductivity, Ab initio plane wave pseudo-potential calculation, strongly correlated electron systems, electronic structure and transport through nano-materials.
    – Quantum field theory, mathematical physics, cognitive science, granular physics, non-commutative quantum mechanics, statistical physics, non-linear dynamics, turbulences, lattice gauge theories, representation theory of lie groups and coherent states, quantum optics, black holes, constrained dynamics, quantum gravity, quantum spin systems, collective behaviour and emergent phenomena, explosive percolation, complex networks and critical phenomena.
    – Cosmology, Relativistic Astrophysics, ionospheric science, Astrochemistry.
  • Applicants may be registered for a PhD degree in their home country (SANDWICH option), or may enrol in a PhD course at the S.N. Bose National Centre (FULL-TIME option). In both cases, the programme entails only one journey to the host country.
  • Admission to the PhD programme at the S.N. Bose National Centre will depend on the successful completion of coursework (about one year’s duration).
  • S.N. Bose will provide a monthly stipend to cover living costs and food. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. Free on-campus accommodation will be provided. The monthly stipend does not cover comprehensive health insurance.  The Centre does however deduct a small contribution towards a Contributory Medical Scheme. The benefits are partial reimbursement of Doctor’s fees, medicines and/or hospitalization costs, if any, and only for costs incurred in Kolkata. The reimbursement structure is along the lines of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) of the Government of India.
  • The S.N. Bose Centre  does not provide comprehensive health or medical insurance to its staff or students. All SN Bose-TWAS fellows must have their own “Medical Insurance” before joining the programme to cover medical emergencies.
  • The language of instruction is English.

Eligibility

Candidates for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:

  • be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year;
  • be nationals of a developing country (other than India);
  • must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country;
  • hold a Masters Degree in physics, mathematics or physical chemistry. S/He must have completed at least a total 5 years of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in a recognized university or institute.
  • be accepted by a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre. Prospective applicants are advised to visit the S.N. Bose National Centre’s website www.bose.res.in and seek to find a potential supervisor under whom they would like to pursue their research and contact them. The University of Augsburg and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich invite applications for 12 Doctoral Positions in their new International Doctorate Program (IDK) funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria.

Doctoral Position at the University of Augsburg

Based at the Environmental Science Center WZU (Augsburg) and the Rachel Carson Center (Munich), the program offers a unique opportunity to pursue a PhD degree under the supervision of faculty from both universities: each doctoral student will be supervised by an interdisciplinary team. Participating disciplines include American Studies, Anthropology, Didactics of Geography, Economics, Environmental Ethics, Environmental Health Sciences, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Philosophy, History, Human Geography, Iberian & Latin American Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and Theology. Languages are English and German. The program is continuously supported by international guest professors, experienced practitioners, and creative artists/writers whose work focuses on environmental topics.

We offer positions (65%, TVL-13) to twelve doctoral students for a period of three years who want to explore the topic of the IDK from an interdisciplinary perspective. Possible topics can be found on the IDK website. In addition to these funded positions, there is a limited number of non-funded doctoral affiliations (“Promotionsplätze”) available for candidates who have already obtained external PhD funding. The IDK starts on October 1, 2021.

We welcome applications from all participating disciplines and particularly encourage interdisciplinary proposals. Applicants must have a completed degree (M.A., M.Sc. or equivalent) with above average grades in one of the participating disciplines. Submissions should include the online application form (available from our website), a letter of motivation (400 words max.), a short CV (max. 2 pages), a PhD proposal (max. 1800 words, including abstract and timeline), copies of your university degree(s), a recent publication (e.g. peerreviewed article, book chapter), or your final thesis if applicable. The PhD fellowship for women scientists from Science and Technology Lagging Countries (STLCs) supports them to undertake PhD research in the Natural, Engineering and Information Technology sciences at a host institute in the South. The fellowships are to be held at a centre of excellence in a developing country outside the applicant’s own country.

Each fellowship will be offered for up to four years and will cover the following:

  • A monthly allowance to cover basic living expenses such as accommodation and meals while in the host country
  • A special allowance to attend international conferences during the period of the fellowship
  • A return ticket from the home country to the host institute for the agreed research period
  • Visa expenses
  • Annual medical insurance contribution
  • The opportunity to attend regional science communications workshops, on a competitive basis
  • Study fees (including tuition and registration fees) in agreement with the chosen host institute which is also expected to contribute
  • Travel expenses to and from the host institute

GERDA HENKEL STIFTUNG / Funding Programme Lost Cities

Background Funding Programme “Lost Cities. Perception of and living with abandoned cities in the cultures of the world”

The enormous process of urbanization, which has defined world history for thousands of years in different economic situations and with regional variations, and which is now developing a particular dynamism, has another side to it that initially appears paradoxical – namely the shrinking and entirely abandoned cities, the so-called Lost Cities. Current transformation processes in various parts of the world mean that many of these Lost Citiesare emerging. Nevertheless, the phenomenon is not a new one, but has been a widespread hallmark of urban history since the emergence of urban culture in the fourth century B.C. It has therefore been perceived, reflected on and interpreted in very different ways in the cultural history of urban life. With this finding as a starting point and a goal of placing current problem situations in a greater historical context, the Gerda Henkel Foundation has established a new funding programme for the theme Lost Cities. Perception of and living with abandoned cities in the cultures of the world.

Announcement

The funding programme is designed to be interdisciplinary and to facilitate projects in which there are varied dimensions to the examination of abandoned cities. At the same time, there should be a focus on causal correlations, both with regard to specific individual cultures and spanning all cultures, and on specifics of place and time. Thus far, such places have emerged for very different reasons, including military destruction, natural disasters, epidemics, environmental pollution, economic collapse, financial speculation, mobility, migration, centralization, deindustrialization, or post-colonial change, to name but a few.

The aim of the programme is to describe the tangible cultures of interpretation, knowledge and perception within these different contexts. Lost Cities are part of a distinct culture of memory, for example, which serves for the negotiation of identities, the preservation of knowledge cultures, the formulation of criticism of progress, or the construction of mythical or sacral topographies as part of a veritable “ruin cult”. On this basis, the focus here should not be on the question of which factors led to the city’s abandonment. Rather, it is the abandoned cities themselves that are of particular interest, as well as the different forms of their interpretation, instrumentalization and coding in various cultures and time frames.

As expert reviewers contribute: Prof. Dr. Martin Zimmermann, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and Prof. Dr. Andreas Beyer, University of Basel. The Board of Trustees decides on the applications on the basis of a recommendation from the experts and the members of the Academic Advisory Council.

Application

Prerequisites

Eligible to apply are post-doctoral researchers based in a university and working in the area of the humanities and the social sciences. Funding can be provided for projects with a thematic focus being addressed by a group of researchers. The Foundation uses the term “group of researchers” to mean associations of at least two researchers actively involved in the project work which is to be funded by means of scholarships from the Foundation and who are carrying out research into the same issues. Applications can only be made for PhD or research scholarships. Applications for a research scholarship by the applicant (project leader) are also possible. A maximum total of three scholarships per group of researchers can be applied for, as well as funds for travel and materials. A fundamental prerequisite for a grant is that project staff conduct their own research, which is published under their name. Other contributors who are not financed by scholarships can also be involved in the project. Scholarship applications made by individual researchers outside of the group are not accepted. The funding programme also provides for the project partners to participate in a public “workshop discussion on Lost Cities” organised by the Foundation.

The Foundation generally accepts applications for research projects made by universities, other research institutes or comparable institutions as well as by one or several Postdocs or scholars with Post Doctoral Lecture Qualification.

The grants for research projects involve, depending on the type of project, the assumption of costs for personnel, travel, materials and/or other costs.

The maximum duration is 36 months.

The applicants must be actively involved in the research work of the project.

Project staff on research projects may only be financed by PhD or research grants. A fundamental prerequisite for a grant is that project staff conduct their own research, which is published under their name. The simultaneous receipt of salary or retirement pension and a research scholarship is not possible. The period of support for Foundation stipend holders working on Ph.D. or research projects can be extended by up to 12 months if the holder becomes a parent during the period covered by the stipend and has an entitlement to maternity or parental leave. Individual arrangements must be discussed with the Foundation’s administrative office.

As part of a research project, the costs incurred of visiting (foreign) scholars can also be financed.

    • plus bibliography if necessary (in addition to the max. 8-10 pages)

    • please choose a readable font, e.g. Arial 11 pt. or Times New Roman 12 pt. (We kindly ask you to keep to the formal requirements on how to compile application documents)
  • work plan and time schedule, travel itinerary (if needed)
  • detailed cost calculation
    • specific funds being applied for must be precisely defined
    • no college or tuition fees
    • no overhead costs
  • curriculum vitae and list of publications of the applicant(s)
  • if needed, curriculum vitae and list of publications of the proposed project participant(s)
  • if needed, academic certificates of the project participant(s) (Masters, PhD, professorship, etc.; please do not send Bachelor certificates)

Payment

Application for scholarships as part of a research project

Project staff on research projects may only be financed by PhD or research grants. A fundamental prerequisite for a grant is that project staff conduct their own research, which is published under their name. The period of support for Foundation stipend holders working on Ph.D. or research projects can be extended by up to 12 months if the holder becomes a parent during the period covered by the stipend and has an entitlement to maternity or parental leave. Individual arrangements must be discussed with the Foundation’s administrative office. The following rates apply:

PhD scholarships

Monthly scholarship award: 1,600 euros

Foundation stipend holders working on Ph.D. or research projects with children, will receive a monthly family grant in addition to their scholarship. The family grant is awarded on presentation of the child’s birth certificate and disbursed for children who have not yet turned 18.  

•    for one child: EUR 400
•    each further child: EUR 100

Monthly endowment for scholarships abroad: 400 euros

Material aid: as required

Research Scholarships for Postdocs

Monthly scholarship award: 2,300 euros

The paradigm of the developed Global North and the developing/underdeveloped Global South has been fundamentally challenged over the last decades: by geopolitical shifts and by a destabilisation of the idea of an industrialised modernity through climate change and the decline in resources. Further, decolonial movements have been questioning existing hierarchies in development and the epistemological models that underwrites them. On the other hand, global inequalities are deepening and many contemporary challenges can only be meaningfully addressed through global cooperation and critical engagement with development debates and practices. The research group is concerned with the spatialisation of global inequalities and the conditions of social transformation, especially in the thematic areas of naturecultures, planetary health and environmental justice. Our work is located in the interdisciplinary field of feminist and postcolonial science and technology studies, more-than-human geography/multispecies ethnography and global health. As a working group, we value collaboration, exchange and are committed to a caring academic environment.

The position is aimed at furthering the candidate’s academic qualification (doctorate). The topic of the dissertation is to be defined independently in cooperation with the academic supervisor. Project Description
The Ethics of Exchange: the regulation of Organ Donation and Transplantation is an exciting new research project led by Dr. Farrah Raza that combines doctrinal legal methods and medical anthropology to uncover how the law on organ donation and transplantation is negotiated in practice in two jurisdictions with different regulations. The guiding question of the project is how various actors make decisions about organ donation and transplantation in different sets of cases. This includes how hospitals and specialist ethics committees devise policies and procedures, how clinicians engage with patients and their families in decision-making and understanding the role of religious and cultural norms in obtaining consent. The aim of the project is to provide a detailed account of how the different layers of decision-making in organ donation and transplantation intermesh within the clinical setting. The project will consist of two key inter-related workstreams. The first workstream The Procedures and Substance of Hospital Ethics Committees and decision-making in Organ Donation and Transplantation will focus on the emergence and application of ethical frameworks and norms in practice. The second workstream Religion, Culture and Minority Rights in Organ Donation and Transplantation will focus on how religious and cultural diversity is accommodated in clinical decision-making. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential duty of the PhD student will be to develop, write and submit a PhD dissertation on a subject of relevance to the research group project. This should include a substantial period of ethnographic fieldwork in the UK or Germany at relevant hospitals and/or appropriate research sites. The PhD student will be encouraged to develop his/her own project in collaboration with the Project Leader in order to achieve a coherent and comparative approach to the research questions. The PhD student will be expected to contribute to project outputs such as publications and conferences.

Your Profile
Applicants should hold an advanced degree in Law. Excellent academic writing and communication skills in English/German are essential. 
Prior field experience in the designated region and knowledge of additional relevant local languages are desirable. Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute, Faculty of Science & Engineering

The Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute is a centre for top-noted research and teaching in biomolecular sciences, hosting the subdisciplines biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysical chemistry, cell biology, chemical biology, enzymology, genetics, microbiology, computational modeling, and systems biology. The focus is on curiosity-driven science, with application outlets into (industrial) biotechnology and biomedicine.

The 5 PhD students with backgrounds in (bio)physics, (bio)chemistry, systems-, computational- or molecular biology will conduct curiosity-driven biomolecular research to investigate a bold hypothesis, which has potential to radically change our view on the inner working of a cell. The research will be performed in one of five different research groups of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute. There will be significant interactions and collaborations between the five PhD students and all of the involved research groups. In addition to conducting research, there will be some teaching duties (~10% of your time).

Project

Recent data suggest that there is an upper limit for the amount of work a cell can sustain. In other words: we have indications that during catalysis enzymes start moving in space, that this movement stirs up the cellular content and that too much of such stirring perturbs biomolecular processes. If we can show that this is true, this would radically change how we understand the inner working of a cell and as such, it would have wide-ranging implications for our understanding of a number of diseases and also for applications in industrial biotechnology.

The five PhD students will form an interdisciplinary team, spread across five labs, and will exploit some of the latest state-of-the-art methods comprising both experimental and computational approaches to investigate this hypothesis, with lots of opportunities for excellent and groundbreaking science, and a great learning experience in a very nice team. The individual projects and the respective advisors are:

• Project 1 investigates the in vitro diffusion of purified (engineered) enzymes with two different experimental methods (TIRF microscopy, mass photometry) as a function of various conditions, in presence or absence of substrate (Profs. Dirk-Jan Slotboom/Marco Fraaije, https://www.membraneenzymology.com and https://www.fraaije.info ).
• Project 2 investigates the mechanisms which lead to enhanced diffusion or self-propulsion of the enzyme using optical tweezers; this will involve single-molecule dynamic force measurements of enzyme domain movements during catalysis (Dr. Kasia Tych, http://www.ktsinglemolecule.com ).
• Project 3 determines condition-dependent cytoplasmic diffusivity of macromolecules, for which single-molecule displacement mapping and super-resolution imaging will be used, with the aim of assessing the correlation between the mobility and the cellular Gibbs energy dissipation rates (Prof. Bert Poolman, https://www.membraneenzymology.com ).
• Project 4 uses coarse-grain multi-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate enzyme motion over long time scales (>milliseconds) and to probe the effect of agitation on crowded solutions of proteins mimicking the cytoplasm (Prof. Siewert-Jan Marrink).
• Project 5 assesses the consequences of enhanced cytoplasmic agitation on various cellular regulatory processes, with genetic perturbation experiments, microscopic experiments, proteomics, and RNA structural analyses (Prof. Heinemann/Dr. Danny Incarnato, https://www.heinemannlab.eu , http://incarnatolab.com ).

And, as an added benefit, this overall project also aims to establish novel ways to communicate our fundamental research to the general public, with the help of a dedicated team from the HKU University of Arts in Utrecht.

The ADAPTED research and training programme:

  • WP 1: Validating Pathways: We want to investigate how effective different growth- and social protection-oriented policies are in improving poverty-related outcomes, given the large heterogeneity of low- and middle-income countries and the differences in the target groups that these policies are able to reach.
