The Research Committee (Special Account for Research Funds) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the framework of the project “Scholarship grant for a researcher at risk” funded by the Research Committee and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with Academic Head, Assoc. Prof. Alexandros Triantafyllidis, invites candidates to submit application for one research position for an at risk (*as defined below) highly skilled scientist (through a scholarship grant), for 12 months with a total anticipated remuneration 14.400 euro starting in April 2021 or as soon as the selected candidate can get a travel visa (in case they reside outside Greece).

* The call is addressed to non-Greek citizens in one of the following positions:
1. Possession of refugee status in Greece or in another EU member state,
2. Recognition of subsidiary protection status in Greece or in another EU member state,
3. Presentation of an official request for the recognition of the refugee status or of subsidiary protection status in Greece or in another European Union member state, and recognition as an ‘at-risk scholar’ by Scholars at Risk (SAR-status),
4. Residing in Greece or in another EU member state and already identified as ‘at-risk scholar’ by Scholars at Risk,
5. Living in a non-EU country and already identified as an ‘at-risk scholar’ by SAR,
6. Currently at risk in their home country due to the content of their work or to the ideas they have openly expressed; and already identified/or in the process to be identified as an ‘at-risk scholar’ by SAR.

1. Job Description

The successful candidate will conduct research in Aristotle University’s premises under the mentorship of a Faculty member in any of the Schools of the University.
The hosting period will give the scholar the experience of a European research and training institute and strengthen research collaboration.

2. Required Qualifications

  • Proof of at-risk situation, as described above
  • Doctoral (Phd) Degree in any of the subject areas available at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
  • Good knowledge of the English language (B2 Level)
  • Brief Research Proposal (up to 1000 words in English) which should include:o Research objectives
    o Methodology and implementation
    o Scientific and/or social impact
    o Impact on the career prospects of the candidate
  • Invitation/letter of intent from an AUTh Faculty member working in the same field/subject area which should include (a) the reasons for proposing the candidate researcher and (b) his/her commitment to:o Host the researcher in his/her School or Laboratory in AUTh’ s premises
    o Supervise/work together with the selected researcher in the proposed research project o Submit an Evaluation Report upon completion of the scholarship

3. Additional Qualification

  • Announcements in conferences relevant to their field of expertise
  • Publications in scientific journals relevant to their field of expertise

  1. From all the applications submitted, according to the above specifications, the one that best meets the project’s requirements will be selected and awarded a scholarship grant.
  2. Only applications submitted within the period mentioned above will be considered. In case of postal submission, the Research Committee of AUTh will not bear any responsibility for the submission time or the content of the files that will be sent.
  3. Changes to the application (replacements, corrections or submission of additional documents) are not allowed after the expiration of the deadline.
  4. It should be noted that the invitation for awarding scholarship grants in the framework of the project is not a competitive tendering procedure, while the potential selection of counterparties should be interpreted as an acceptance of a proposal for hiring and not as “hiring”. The aforementioned process will be completed with the announcement of a ranking list, while those candidates selected will be personally notified. In case of a tie, the candidate whose application has a) the longest experience, b) the greatest bachelor’s degree mark, or c) the greatest master’s degree mark, will be selected.
  5. Any submitted candidacy that does not meet the criteria of the call will not be examined any further and will be automatically rejected.
  6. Throughout the duration of the project it is possible that the selected candidate(s) may be replaced, if necessary, by other candidate(s) of the present call and in accordance with the ranking list.
  7. This call for expression of interest does not, under any circumstances, bind the Research Committee of AUTh to establish cooperation with stakeholders and does not create any labor claims. The Research Committee of AUTh reserves the right to select the candidate, and it remains in the Committee’s full discretion to conclude or not the relevant contracts, excluding any claim by the candidates.
  8. The work contract awarded shall comply with the general and specific guidelines of the funding mechanism.
  9. For candidates, language knowledge shall be certified according to Article 1 of Presidential Decree 146/2007 “Modification of provisions of Presidential Decree 50/2001 Defining qualifications for the appointments of posts in the public sector” (Official Gazette 185/3.8.2007/Issue A’), in conjunction with the last passage of paragraph 1 of Article 1 of the Presidential Decree 116/2006 “Amendment of Article 28 of Presidential Decree 50/2001” (Official Gazette 115/9.6.2006/Issue A’). For foreign candidates, there shall be equivalent language skills verification.

Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance is opening up to 2 post-doc positionsin the broad research area of Governance of Smart Cities. The prospective post-docs are requested to propose their own more specific research projects that will support the development of the Finest Twins Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Smart Cities, the first smart city CoE globally focusing on the development of cross-border, sustainable and resilient smart city models and solutions. The post-doc project should focus on theoretical, critical, empirical or action research that contributes to the establishment of smart, resilient and sustainable cities worldwide. 


Smart city governance research and practice is evolving from the original techno-centrism towards encompassing broader notions of public value, citizen participation, resilience and sustainability. The parallel evolution of global technological opportunities and new forms of more localized social interactions and dynamics poses complex governance challenges and opportunities. These range from developing technical, legal, data and institutional capacities for utilizing traditional smart city solutions to building new governance platforms for smart (enough) cities that achieve sustainable and resilient integration of technological and social processes. 

There are five key inter-related themes in smart city research that we are interested and we believe will crucially structure smart city developments in the coming decade:

1. Innovation capacities of smart cities: How can cities become “smart” in the sense of supporting both technological innovation and diffusion as well as economic development of local communities as part of smart city initiatives? What kind of policies and governance models should underpin this? Can we envision alternative policy and governance models for the existing “best practices”?

2. Sustainability of smart cities: How can cities become “smart enough” in the sense of sustainable development, including goals of climate neutrality, environmental and technological self-sufficiency and resilience? What kind of models of technology governance (e.g. open-source) are best fitted for these goals? How to measure the “smart sustainability” or “smart resilience” of cities and what kind of policies and governance models should underpin them? 

3. People-centric and inclusive smart cities: How can cities become “smart” in the sense of providing functional cross-sectoral and cross-border platforms for public policy and service co-creation and co-production as the basis for legitimacy, people-centredness and happiness? What kind of governance models are required for people-centric and inclusive smart cities? Can we envision alternative governance models for the existing “best practices”?

4. Data governance in smart cities: How should cities develop capacities and processes for using data within municipal departments and for, regional, state-level and international cross-border collaborations? How can “twin smart cities” provide services to citizens residing in the neighbouring city? How can the interoperability challenges be mastered that cross-border exchange of data poses, how can an ecosystem be provided that enables the City as a Platform? Which drivers can be identified to accelerate and which barriers need to be overcome to foster cross-border smart city services? Which are the needs of the stakeholders when providing services cross-border?

5. Beyond the Smart City: How can cities sustainably collaborate with each other and/or integrate with their surroundings, nationally as well as cross-border?  What are the potential alternatiive models for regional and international cross-border collaborations (i.e. between Tallinn and Helsinki) and beyond (e.g. Tallinn-Helsinki and Singapore)? How do the ideological and ethical differences between regions and places affect Smart City developmets and integration/collaboration? Is “more” always “better”, or can we consider, for the post-Covid19 world, “smart-enough” approaches as being more effective, legitimate, sustainable and resilient? 

The prospective post-docs are encouraged to provide their original theoretical, empirical or action research projects that tackle one or several of these challenges.

During the research, the post-docs should develop and implement in cooperation with supervisors the research plan that should also be in-line and contribute to the strategic research direction of the Nurkse Department and the Finest Twins Smart City CoE. As part of the project, the post-docs are also expected to gain teaching, supervision and research management experiences at the Nurkse Department and the Smart City CoE.

A successful candidate should preferably have: 

– a PhD degree in social sciences (preferably in public administration, political science or economics) or in other areas with additional proof of social science research skills;

– a clear interest and own vision for independent research in the topic of the position;

– capacity and willingness to provide assistance in organizational tasks relevant to the project.

At the Faculty of History, Arts and Oriental Studies, Institute for the Study of Religions, the above position is to be filled from April 1, 2021, subject to the availability of funds. The employment takes place within the DFG funded project “Piety and Secularity Contested: Family and Youth Politics in post-Kemalist ‘New Turkey’.”

In two interrelated subprojects, the research project examines the effects of current political transformations in Turkey on the domains of family and youth. Special attention will be paid to the changes in these domains as pushed forward under the government of the “Justice and Development Party” (AKP). In this context, both the religious-political vision on which these changes are based and their resonance in different social milieus of Turkish society will be examined.

Methodologically, the project is based on (1) the analysis of AKP discourses in relation to the domains of family and youth as well as public discussions about these discourses; (2) focus group interviews with NGOs; and (3) milieu- specific group discussions with residents of selected neighborhoods.


The researcher should carry out the sub-project on youth policy and should participate in the supervision and guidance of the doctoral student working on the project. In addition, he/she is expected to play an active role in the detailed planning, implementation, and evaluation of the project, in the organization of topic-specific workshops and scientific cooperations, as well as in the publications of the project.

Pursuit of an additional scientific qualification (habilitation) is possible but not a prerequisite.

Mekanda Adalet Derneği (MAD) olarak bu yıl üçüncüsünü yürüteceğimiz #MADaraştırma destek programını sunmaktan mutluluk duyuyoruz!

Mekân çalışmalarını ve toplumsal adalet gündemini birleştiren araştırma ve üretimlere destek veren #MADaraştırma programını salgın gündeminin üzerinden durmak için gözden geçirdik.

Bu bağlamda, bu yıl #MADaraştırma çerçevesinde, geniş bir şekilde tanımladığımız mekânsal adalet araştırma gündemiyle kesişmesi kaydıyla, Halk SağlığıAfet, Güvenlik, Bilim ve Teknoloji, Doğa temalarına odaklanan, salgının yarattığı belirsizlik ve dönüşüm potansiyelini anlamamıza yardımcı olacak araştırma ve üretimlere destek sağlanacaktır.

Araştırma desteği, son aşamasına gelinmiş bir araştırmanın sonuçlandırılması, kapsamlı bir araştırmanın sınırları belirli bir bölümü, yahut henüz başlanmamış ancak bir kaç ay içinde bitirilebilecek dar kapsamlı bir araştırma için kullanılabilir. COVID-19 salgını sebebiyle saha çalışması yapmanın güçleştiğinin farkındayız. Dolayısıyla destek programı çerçevesinde bu yıl, halihazırda verisi toplanmış çalışmalara, farklı literatürleri bir araya getirme iddiasında olan ufuk açıcı analizlere, salgın ile mücadele adına sahada olan araştırmacılara ve bilhassa mevcut şartları yaratıcı araştırma yöntemleri ile aşan nitelikli tekliflere öncelik verilecektir.

Desteğin kapsamı: Program, iki taksitle verilecek ve araştırmacının kendi insiyatifinde kullanacağı en az 8.000 TL’lik maddi desteği, (koşullar düzeldiği takdirde) MAD Karaköy Ofisi ve kütüphanesini kullanma imkanını ve araştırma sonunda ortaya çıkacak ürünün görselleştirilmesi sürecindeki fikri ve teknik desteği kapsar.

Araştırma Çıktıları: Bu araştırma desteği ile hazırlanacak (makale, nitelikli değerlendirme, araştırmacı gazetecilik dosyası, politika metni, video-belgesel, harita gibi farklı formatlardaki) çıktıların, derneğimizin kamuya açık etkinlik programı #MADakademi buluşmaları bünyesinde sunumları gerçekleştirilir. Araştırma çıktıları yine Ocak 2021 içinde basılması öngörülen #MADjournal’da yayımlanır. Dolayısıyla destek verilen araştırmaların aşağıda belirtilen takvime bağlı kalarak, #MADakademi buluşmaları ve #MADjournal mecralarında sunulabilecek şekilde bitirilmesi şart koşulur.
